His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the 5th President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, serving since January 7, 2017. A human rights lawyer, politician, and former Attorney General, he has championed policies including Free Senior High School education and the "Ghana Beyond Aid" agenda.

Roles of the President

Under the 1992 Constitution, the President serves as both Head of State and Head of Government.

Head of State

Represents Ghana in international affairs, receives foreign dignitaries, and embodies the unity and sovereignty of the nation.

Head of Government

Leads the Executive branch, chairs Cabinet meetings, and directs government policy and administration.

Commander-in-Chief

Supreme commander of the Ghana Armed Forces with authority over defense and national security matters.

Legislative Functions

Signs bills into law, delivers State of the Nation Address, and may refer bills to the Supreme Court.

Appointments

Appoints Ministers, Judges of the Superior Courts, and other key officials subject to Parliamentary approval.

Honours & Pardons

Awards national honours, grants pardons, and exercises the prerogative of mercy in accordance with the Constitution.
