President outlines education reform agenda in address to the nation

In a televised address, the President announced a comprehensive education reform package aimed at improving learning outcomes from basic school through university, with implementation starting in September 2026.

The President of the Republic of Ghana addressed the nation on 6 March 2026, setting out a three-pillar education reform agenda. The pillars cover curriculum modernisation, teacher welfare and professional development, and expanded technical and vocational education and training (TVET) pathways.

At the basic school level, a revised national curriculum will introduce digital literacy, financial literacy, and civic education as core subjects from Primary 4 upward. The Ghana Education Service (GES) will train 45,000 teachers in the new curriculum over the next twelve months, with a focus on districts in the Northern, Savannah, and North-East regions where learning outcomes trail the national average.

For senior high schools, the reform expands TVET tracks to cover agribusiness, software development, renewable energy installation, and construction technology. The Ministry of Education will partner with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Service (COTVET) to certify programmes under the Ghana Qualifications Framework (GQF).

The President called on parents, teachers, and communities to participate in the implementation. More details will be published on the Ministry of Education website by 30 April 2026.
