Apply for a change of name
Legally change your name by deed poll or statutory declaration through the Registrar-General's Department. Once registered, you can update your Ghana Card, passport, and other official documents.
Before you apply
Have a licensed solicitor prepare the deed poll or statutory declaration before visiting the Registrar-General’s Department. The document must state your old name, your new name, and the reason for the change.
Step by step
- Instruct a solicitor to prepare your deed poll or statutory declaration.
- Have the document sworn before a Commissioner for Oaths or a notary.
- Visit the Registrar-General’s Department with the deed, your Ghana Card, birth certificate, and two passport photographs.
- Complete the application form and pay the registration fee.
- Receive your certificate of change of name within 5 working days.
After you apply
Use your certificate to update your Ghana Card at any NIA centre, and your passport through the Ghana Immigration Service. Notify your employer, bank, and other institutions of the change.
