Apply for a local business operating permit
Get your business operating permit (also called a business operating licence) from your Metropolitan, Municipal, or District Assembly (MMDA). All businesses operating in Ghana must hold a current permit.
Before you apply
Confirm which assembly covers your business address. Some assemblies allow online applications; others require in-person submission. Check with your local assembly before gathering documents.
Step by step
- Obtain your business registration certificate from the Office of the Registrar of Companies and your business TIN from GRA.
- Obtain a fire safety certificate from the Ghana National Fire Service for your premises.
- Complete the business operating permit application form at your MMDA.
- Submit all documents and pay the permit fee.
- An inspection officer may visit your premises to verify compliance.
- Collect your permit certificate once all checks are cleared.
After you apply
Display your permit prominently at your place of business. Renew it each year before the expiry date — operating without a current permit is an offence under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
