Apply for a marriage certificate

Register a marriage under the Marriage Act and request a certified copy. Customary and religious marriages can also be registered for legal recognition.

Before you apply

Decide whether you are registering a civil marriage (Ordinance), a customary marriage, or a religious marriage. Each has a distinct path.

Step by step

1. File a notice of intention to marry at the Registrar’s office 21 days before the ceremony.
2. Return on the scheduled day for the civil ceremony.
3. Receive the marriage certificate.
