Apply for a National Health Insurance card

Register with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and get your health insurance card. Your card gives you access to free or subsidised healthcare at accredited facilities across Ghana.

Before you apply

Check whether you qualify for an exemption — children, the elderly, pregnant women, and SSNIT contributors pay no annual premium. Gather your Ghana Card and one passport photograph before visiting your nearest NHIA district office.

Step by step

  1. Visit any National Health Insurance Authority district or municipal office.
  2. Complete the registration form and present your identity document.
  3. Pay the annual premium if you are not in an exempt category.
  4. Receive your NHIS membership card or a temporary slip within 5 working days.

After you apply

Present your NHIS card at any accredited health facility to access covered services. Renew your membership each year before it expires to avoid a break in coverage. You can renew at any NHIA office or through the *929# USSD code.
