Apply for a Ghana residence permit

Apply for a residence permit to live in Ghana as a foreign national for longer than your visa allows. The Ghana Immigration Service issues permits under the Immigration Act, 2000 (Act 573).

Before you apply

Do not let your current visa or permit expire before applying. Overstaying your authorised period attracts fines and may affect future applications. Gather all documents before visiting the Ghana Immigration Service headquarters in Accra or a regional office.

Step by step

  1. Download or collect the GIS residence permit application form.
  2. Gather all supporting documents for your permit category.
  3. Book a biometrics appointment at a GIS office.
  4. Submit your completed application, documents, and fee payment at the appointment.
  5. Receive an acknowledgement slip with your application reference.
  6. Collect your permit or receive it by post when notified.

After you apply

Your residence permit specifies the conditions of your stay. Notify the Ghana Immigration Service of any changes to your employment, address, or personal details. Renew at least 3 months before your permit expires.
