Register a trademark
Protect your brand name, logo, or slogan by registering a trademark with the Registrar-General's Department under the Trademarks Act, 2004 (Act 664). Registration gives you the exclusive right to use your mark in Ghana.
Before you apply
Conduct a trademark search on the RGD database to check that your mark does not conflict with an existing registration. Consider working with a registered trademark agent for complex applications.
Step by step
- Conduct a trademark search at the Registrar-General’s Department online or in person.
- Prepare the representation of your mark and the list of goods or services by Nice Classification class.
- Submit TM Form 1 (Application for Registration of Trade Mark) with all supporting documents.
- Pay the application fee per class.
- The RGD examines your application. If accepted, it is published in the Trademarks Journal for a 2-month opposition period.
- If no opposition is received, the certificate of registration is issued.
After you register
Renew your trademark every 10 years before expiry. Use the ® symbol only after registration is confirmed. Monitor the Trademarks Journal for conflicting marks and file an opposition promptly if needed.
